The ministry of Works and Transport has officially launched the 2025 National Road safety week under the theme “Safe vehicle for a safer Uganda.” The annual campaign held every December aims to raise public awareness on road safety during the festive season a period known for heightened travel and increased crash risks.

In his statement, the Minister of Works and Transport Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala emphasized the urgent need for Ugandans to prioritize vehicle safety as the country continues to face an alarming number of road crashes. Uganda loses an average of 14 lives every day to road crashes, with the number rising during peak travel seasons.

As part of this year’s campaign, the Ministry is rallying all actors in the vehicle network, including vehicle dealers, fuel and lubricant suppliers, manufacturers, mechanics, UNBS, enforcement agencies, fleet owners, and the media, to actively participate in promoting safer vehicle standards.

The Minister also highlighted the ongoing stakeholder engagements on Mandatory Motor Vehicle Inspection Services, designed to ensure that vehicles on the road meet minimum safety standards. He also urged drivers, motorcycle riders, and passengers to remain vigilant against common risk factors such as speeding, drink-driving, distracted driving, and failure to use helmets, seatbelts, and child restraints.

With Uganda headed into the 2026 general election season, the Minister called on campaign teams and supporters to remain cautious on the roads and avoid reckless behaviours.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to reducing road crash fatalities and serious injuries by 50% by the year 2030, aligning with global road safety targets.

The Minister concluded by wishing all Ugandans a safe festive season, urging every road user to “drive responsibly and ensure that your vehicles are in roadworthy condition.”
