The future of smart urban living in Kampala.

Kampala has taken a bold step toward safer and more efficient roads with the launch of the new traffic control centre by the Kampala capital city Authority (KCCA), supported by the Japan international cooperation Agency. This state-of-the art facility connects to 30 intersections across the city, enabling real-time monitoring and smarter management of road use.

For a city that has long struggled with congestion and high crash rates, the centre offers fresh hope. By detecting incidents quickly, adjusting signal timings and easing traffic flow, authorities can now respond to challenges before they turn into road crashes. With this it means fewer delays, safe intersections and most of all protection for all road users.

The traffic Control centre-Kampala

As of the KCCA Kampala road safety report 2024, the number of road crashes in Kampala speaks volumes as the city lost 404 lives while the serious injuries at 3078 road users. Vulnerable groups like motorcyclists and pedestrians accounted for 94% of the deaths.

Most importantly, this initiative (the commissioning of the Traffic Control center) aligns with Global Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 to cut road fatalities by half by 2030. By combining technology enforcement, and community engagements, KCCA shows that road safety is not just an inspiration but a commitment

The new Traffic Control center is more than screens and signals, it gives Kampala city the tools to save lives, protect the vulnerable and make the citys road safer for everyone to use.
