URRENO’s Evidence-Based Policy and Stakeholder Advocacy
Road safety education requires sustained institutional support, trained teachers, appropriate learning materials and adequate resources. URRENO has used advocacy to encourage government, legislators, education authorities and partners to recognise road safety education as an important part of protecting children.
Evidence-Based Advocacy
Through its school road-safety education work, URRENO has undertaken advocacy aimed at strengthening government and legislative support for road safety education and reducing road crashes involving school children.
The advocacy work included:
- Developing advocacy tools based on evidence.
- Conducting a cost-benefit analysis of investment in road safety education.
- Organising a breakfast meeting involving Members of Parliament, the Ministry of Works and Transport, the Ministry of Education and Sports, development partners and NGOs.
- Engaging the Ministry of Education’s Steering Monitoring Committee.
- Engaging senior government leadership on financing and support for road safety education.
Government Engagement
URRENO engaged government leadership on the need for increased support and financing for road safety education.
The documented advocacy work reports that URRENO engaged the Prime Minister on the need for government support and financing for road safety education. Following the engagement, the Minister of Works and Transport was directed to begin budgeting for road safety education in subsequent financial years.
Linking Evidence to Policy
URRENO’s advocacy approach links programme evidence with policy dialogue.
The work combines research, cost-benefit analysis, stakeholder mobilisation, government engagement and advocacy for institutional support.
This approach allows evidence generated through road safety education programmes to inform discussions with decision-makers and other stakeholders about the importance of sustained investment in protecting school children.
URRENO’s Contribution
URRENO’s contribution to road safety education advocacy includes:
- Evidence generation for advocacy.
- Engagement with Parliament and government ministries.
- Engagement with education authorities.
- Cost-benefit analysis to support investment decisions.
- Stakeholder mobilisation.
- Advocacy for government financing and sustained road safety education.
Why Road Safety Education Advocacy Matters
Road safety education requires long-term institutional commitment. Advocacy helps ensure that successful programmes are supported by appropriate policies, resources, trained personnel and coordination among government and other stakeholders.
By connecting research and programme evidence with policy dialogue, URRENO contributes to efforts to strengthen institutional support for road safety education and safer journeys for children.
